You can plan ahead for a healthy pregnancy. It is better to conceive your new baby when both parents are healthy.

Some tips for a healthy lifestyle;

  • STOP smoking
  • STOP or reduce alcohol intake to a few units weekly
  • STOP any recreational drugs
  • If you are taking any regular prescription medication, please consult with your Doctor as your medication may need to be changed or discontinued before embarking on pregnancy.
  • Ensure your diet is healthy, cut out processed and high fat foods, eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables,fish, chicken and at least one portion of red meat weekly.
  • If you are vegetarian ensure your iron sources are high ie: pulses, spinach, molasses.
  • Take regular exercise.

 

  • Your chances of conceiving are higher if your body weight is in proportion to your height. If you are overweight or underweight, it may be advisable to consult a dietician before trying to conceive.
  • If you have been taking the contraceptive pill, it is good to allow a few cycles to pass to work out your fertile period.
  • Commence taking FOLIC ACID 400 mcg daily. This has shown to reduce the incidence of spina bifida. Continue taking folic acid until the end of week 12 in pregnancy.
  • Think about taking out private health insurance, they prefer 10 months paid on the policy pre-pregnancy.
  • Have some blood screening tests carried out to check for Rubella immunity in the woman and also tesing for H.I.V. and HEP, B, for couples.
