Pet passports

If you have got a pet here in Spain and then wish to go back to the U.K. it is a good idea to begin the Pet Passport as soon as you have a pet. Everything else e.g. vaccinations, microchip & rabies you have to do anyway the only extra is a blood test costing about €70 and the cost of the passport which is €25-€30.

  To obtain your Pet Passport

All vaccinations must be up to date.

  Microchip and Pet Passport issued.

Rabies vaccination given, 3 weeks later a blood test is taken to check Rabies immunity.

If the results of the blood test is satisfactory your pet can travel 6 month after the date the blood test is taken.

A few days before your pet is due to travel it must be examined (health check) by your veterinarian and this is recorded in the Pet Passport.

The Pet passport and the blood test certificate (originals) is then taken to the official ministry vet, the nearest here is Velez Málaga although most vets can now do this for you.

If everything os in order the ministry vet will then record and stamp the passport and sign it.

Before travel tick, flea and worm treatments must be given by a vet and the time and date is recorded in the passport.
Remember it must be given not less than 24 hours or more than 48 hours before travel

Again, think of starting a Pet Passport when you get your pet, and it has had it's first Rabies vaccination at 3 months. Just because you love living here now doesn't mean you will in a year's time and if you already have a passport things are a lot easier for you and your pet. To travel back and forth to the U.K. you must have a blood test taken wherever you obtained your passport, either in Spain or in the U.K.
